Eveline and The Dead Comparison

By Rima Andriana (1305085072),

Dubliners is one of James Joyce’s works that contain 15 stories that tell about the story around Dublin, the capital city of Ireland. Most story tell about the epiphanies and paralysis of the characters who live in Dublin. Joyce tried to describe his city as a realistic problems and conflicts through each characters, so the readers able to imagine what kind of city the Dublin is.  Eveline and The Dead  in Dubliners used by Joyce to determine the real paralysis and what the most problem that the Irish in Dublin experience; and there are things or aspects that become the comparison between those stories as well as the similarities and as the differences.

The first thing is the symbol of  the  window. The similarity is about the trapped of  Eveline and Gabriel. In the Eveline story,
Eveline trapped by her promise to her mother and unable to reach her own life for love to her boyfriend, Frank. In The Dead, Gabriel trapped with his own egotism; he had a high ego and always speak without genuineness and being careless when talking with others. When he talked with Lily, he finished it with give her holiday tip, and when he talked with Miss Ivors (p.2247), he finished it with talked if he sick of Irish. He made his life limited. The differences is if Eveline chose to keep trapped with her family even if she was unhappy. But Gabriel started to aware to his egotism when he recognize if he was not the only one perfect and loved by his wife.

The another aspect is from The death symbol for the living dead(real death) and the dead living(life like death). The similarity is The deaths in both stories made the characters did not and could not get their Love (paralysis). In Eveline, the dead was The death of the people who she loved: the death of her mother and her brother Ernest, and of a girlhood friend named Tizzie Dunn. The Fear-- she is afraid to accept the truth because it makes her feel isolated, lonely without their accompany. (par. 2), and The Death of herself because of her promise to her mother, “he would drown her,” She's too scared to leave Ireland, and thus sees her lover as a possible source of danger.” (p. 34, the 1st new par.). In The Dead, the physical death was the death of  Gretta’s first love, Michael Furey; and the death of  Gabriel’s egotism. The differences is, in Eveline story, Eveline still had a chance or still able to get her love, even in fact she chose her family. But In The Dead, Gretta could not able to get her love again, because of her first love was already die. Even if she regretted it and her love still alive, no one can make someone who die become alive again.

So, finally Dubliners is the collection of Joyce’s works when he wrote the story about people in Dublin, that’s why It able to make us as the readers able to imagine the common conflicts in there. Through Eveline and The Dead, we could know if  the dead people can be still alive in the people’s heart who had been leave by them. Also, we could aware if there are some people who still alive but actually they’re die, but the dead of  their feelings or their soul. And through the experience of the characters, we know that if actually someone even in their adolescence aware with something that really responsible and able to choose something that relate with their happiness...
